Dear Chávez Families,

Welcome to May!  This has been a fantastic week of hands-on, minds-on learning here at Chávez. We have had kids visiting Mt. Pisgah, an awesome assembly for our whole community and engaging activities in classrooms, the hallways, music and PE.

This week is Teacher Appreciation Week!  Please help me in thanking all our teachers for the work they do each day to help our kiddos learn and grow!

As we roll into May, I wanted to share a couple of brief reminders:
  • If your child has a phone, please remind them that devices are to be turned off and put away during the school day.
  • Other items; toys, trading cards, money or other items from home should not be brought to school.  They easily become distractions during class, get lost at recess and can be otherwise problematic.  This includes items that kids may be intentionally bringing to trade or sell, as that is not allowed at school.
  • We are very excited about events coming up that bring our community together.   If you schedule allows, please join us.  The connections we make make and time spent together make our community stronger and more supportive.

Thanks for all you do to support our learners,

With gratitude,

Principal Kevin

GO BIG BMX Airshow

We were thrilled to host Danny and Ezekial from GO BIG BMX Airshow who put on a show for our kids that was exciting and impactful. Mixed between amazing BMX freestyle tricks, they delivered a message of perseverance, healthy living, the importance of being kind and setting and working toward goals.  There were soaring jumps, flips and even a a jump over five fearless staff !

Wild Wanderers at Mt. Pisgah

Our first and second grade classrooms are partnering with the Environmental Leadership Program at the University of Oregon to create the Wild Wanderers.  This set of field trips takes our learners to the trails, streams and woodlands of our nearby. Mt. Pisgah Arboretum, where our 4th grade also recently visited.  This partnership is just getting started and we can't wait to see it grow into a program to benefit even more of our learners.

 More News You Can Use

Jog-a-Thon Packets Due

We are still collecting packets through Monday, 5/6.  This date is intended to give time to collect any pledges over the weekend.

If you did not collect pledges prior, please know that flat donations are welcome as you send your envelope back in.

We are hoping for 85% participation from families, simply sending the envelope back. All donations go to enrich the experience of the kids at Chávez.

State Testing Update

Our 3rd through 5th grade students will be taking the Oregon Statewide through the Oregon Statewide Assessment system starting Monday, May 6th. Although they are only one measure of academic success, state test results provide important information for students, families, teachers, schools, and districts.

These summative assessment results show the federal government and the Oregon Department of Education how well all students are performing according to state standards in Math, English Language Arts (reading and writing, or ELA), and Science.

Some helpful tips for parents in supporting our students during assessments:

  • Make sure your child gets a good night’s sleep and eats a healthy breakfast.

  • It is recommended that children in elementary and middle school should get between 9-12 hours of sleep.

  • Remain positive!

  • Staying calm will help your child to stay calm.

  • Remind them to do their breathing exercises to disengage any stress they might have.

  • Utilize positive affirmations!

    • I feel relaxed and confident during tests.

    • I am a good student.

    • I am smart and have a good memory.

    • Testing does not define my skills as an individual.

  • Celebrate the effort your child put forth and congratulate them on doing their best.

Walk and Roll to School  - Wednesday, May 8th

We’re participating in the Walk+Roll to School Challenge on Wednesday May 8th!

We want as many students as possible to use active transportation like walking, biking, scooting, skating as well as shared transportation like carpooling and the bus. Active transportation is good for their health and their ability to learn, while everything we do to reduce the number of families driving alone to school is great for safety in our parking lot and the planet. For those who must drive, we’re encouraging that they “park and stride” from a few blocks away from school.

On May 8th, all our buses will park and unload at the Faith Center and students will be able walk from there with supervision of staff and volunteers.  Interested in volunteering to supervise on that morning?  Please call the office at 541-790-5300
