Our food drive is ON! It was dfecided that if we meet our goal of 1000 pounds of food donated, I will have to dye my beard green AND ride a unicorn to school! I don't know how we ended with a tie in the vote, but we did, so there we are! I LOVE seeing the kids excited about giving and supporting our community. No donation is too small. A single can or a bag of pasta can make a huge difference. Let's do this, together, the Chávez way! Thank you for another amazing week with your kiddos and for your continued support and partnership in your child's education. As your child’s teacher highlighted at your child’s conference in November, one of our school's goals this year is to increase our overall attendance rate. Teachers are spending time highlighting the importance of regular attendance and we will be implementing some fun and engaging activities and events to celebrate regular attendance at school. Did you know that children can suffer academically if they miss 10 percent of the school year? That’s just 18 days or 2 to 3 days a month. Our school is making a renewed commitment to ensure all kids are in school—on time, every day. Research shows that absences, whether for kindergartners or 12th graders, can add up quickly. We don’t want students to miss their learning opportunities if at all possible. While we understand that there will be days when your child may need to stay home, especially when sick, it’s important to note that research indicates that this is when students may begin to fall behind academically due to excessive absences. This year, let’s work together as a community—students, families, staff, EVERYONE! Our students are our first priority, and we want them to be here learning and growing with us! We want to encourage our kids here at Chavez to Be Present, Be Powerful! As a reminder, please make sure to send children to school if they are: • Generally healthy and well. • Participating in usual day-to-day activities. • Children can even go to school if they:
Please check with us if you have questions and avoid keeping children at home unless they are too sick to participate. Thank you for all you do to support our kids! Please see below for more useful information and have a wonderful weekend. Principal Kevin

Dear Chávez Parents & Guardians--
Just wanted to send a counseling program update, and share a resource.
First, we're off to a great start with the social-emotional learning in each classroom community. As you may have heard from your child's classroom teacher, our district uses SecondStep curriculum to teach units on Growth Mindset & Goal-Setting, Emotion Management, Empathy & Kindness, and Problem-Solving. In October, we focus on specialized Bullying Prevention Units so that students have common language and awareness to recognize, refuse and report any experiences with bullying. I've been fortunate to visit each classroom approximately every other week to supplement these lessons and connect with each of our students. We've been learning about our brain-body connections, and the importance of kindness, positive friendships, and community-building. If you are interested in learning more about any of our SEL curriculums (SecondStep, MindUp, or Sources of Strength), feel free to reach out!
Second, I am linking a resource from developmental psychologist, Dr. Laura Markham on communicating with our children about voting and the election. She offers excellent guidance, including broken down by age group here: https://www.peacefulparenthappykids.com/read/how-to-talk-with-your-child-about-voting
As always, feel free to reach out to me by phone (direct office line is 541-790-5323) or email sell_s@4j.lane.edu if you would like to discuss your child. I'm here for all students and families!
Wishing you well,
Ms. Shannon
