Dear Chávez Families,
We have had a wonderful week of learning here at Chávez. Out Kindergarten students got to experience a visit to our own pumpkin patch, 4th graders went to Fish Creek to witness salmon spawning and learn more about the life cycle of these beautiful fish and soccer, soccer, soccer...... we are making great use of our newly fenced greenspace every day!
Staff had a secret spirit week, with kids challenged to guess the theme each day. There was monochromatic Monday, favorite band Tuesday, dress in a decade Wednesday, dress like the principal Thursday and cheetah print Friday. Our kids are very observant and figured it out quickly each day.
This afternoon, we conducted a lock-down drill and kids were responsible, followed directions and practiced the things we do to help keep everyone here at school safe.
Please read on for more news you can use!

Information on Reading and Math Assessments
The Eugene 4j School District administers both reading and math assessments to each of our students three times a year—fall, winter, and spring. Students scoring below the 20th percentile may be recommended, by the building-level team, to receive instructional interventions in reading and/or math. Students receiving interventions will have their progress monitored during regular intervals. At our school, all students receive at least 90 minutes of reading instruction and at least 70 minutes of instruction in the area of mathematics, each day. Parents/guardians will be notified if their child is recommended to receive additional reading and math instruction.

Clarification on News Story Recently Reported
We want to clarify some unfortunate mis-reporting in local media in the last week. A 4J school psychologist assigned to Chavez and Twin Oaks elementaries, Jennifer Blake, was arrested on federal drug charges in a case out of the Ohio U.S. Attorney’s office. She is not currently working in any 4J schools. Some local reporting mis-identified her title as “counselor,” which was incorrect. No school counselors are involved.
We hope you’ll understand that this is not a school district matter, it doesn’t involve other employees or anyone in our school community, and we don’t have other information available.
Principal Kevin's One-Man, Month-Long Jog-a-Thon Starts Soon!

I am at it again, planning a month of running to support projects that benefit kids at our amazing school, Chavez Elementary.
Funds from this one-man, month-long jog-a-thon will support upgrading our playground equipment, community based art experiences and student recognition projects.
Thank you for considering sponsoring me any amount per mile for a month-long run-a-palooza ( yes...... I used palooza) and committing to support our learners.
I believe pledges per mile are more engaging, than flat donations for the kids who will follow along on progress. As the month unfolds, kids will get to run with me, meet up at school for weekend runs and more.
Pledges being made through October 31st. Running starts November 1st and goes through the end of November. At the end of the jog-a-thon, I will share a 'schoolpay' link for payments so the funds flow directly into our district accounting system earmarked for this project. Payment can also be made by check at that time.
Thanks for being awesome. Please share this as you see fit.

An Important Note about Halloween this Year at Chávez.
With increased focus on our instructional priorities and the challenges that halloween costumes can pose in terms of appropriateness and students being able to engage at school, we are not allowing students to wear costumes to school on Halloween. We know that this is a disappointment to some. Please know that we have other events throughout the year to celebrate and connect with our Chávez Family.
Here are some family friendly Halloween events around town.
