Greetings Chávez Families and Happy Friday!
As you can see from the photo above, our kids have started to receive their finished tie dye shirts.  Each one is a work of art created withe the guidance of our talented tie dye artist in residence, Tiana Povenmire-Kirk and a squad of enthusiastic volunteers!  Watching as each kiddo receives their shirt has been the best part of the week here at Chávez!Dress for the Weather
The rain came in this week and with it some soggy kiddos. Â We will go to recess often in the drizzle or light rain. Â Thanks for helping your kiddo to dress for the weather. Â If you have a coat or a jacket that gets shed during the day, labeling it with your child's name helps it make its way back to you when misplacedRisks of Social Media Exposure for Kids - Tik Tok, Youtube, Instagram and MoreAs an educator, I wanted to take a moment to share some important information regarding the potential harms of social media platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube.Â
Several studies recently have highlighted the concerning trends we've observed regarding the negative impact these platforms can have on our students' social interactions and well-being, particularly in the areas of  exposure to homophobic and racist language, negative body image messaging, screen addiction, attention issues and anxiety.
We have had several instances of late where mean-spiriting teasing, racist or homophobic language has been linked to youtube influencers, tik tok or instagram posts viewed by our students. Â This directly challenges our charge to provide a safe and welcoming learning community for all of our students.
To help support you in monitoring and guiding your child's online activities, included  are a few bullet points for your consideration:
- Consider not allowing your child to have a social media account to begin with
- If they do have social media, please follow them and interact with their activity
- Monitor your child's web browser history and messaging with peers
- Have devices stored with you at night to prevent night time use that limits healthy sleep
- Be aware of the types of content your child is engaging with and have discussions about the harmful language or biases they may encounter.
- Explore parental control settings and tools that can help filter or limit access to certain types of content.
- Foster an environment where your child feels comfortable coming to you with any concerns or questions they may have about their online experiences.
We want to partner with you to support you and your child in navigating this digital landscape. Â Some additional links are below.Local Pediatrician Pilar Bradshaw - Dangers of Social MediaTik Tok Executives Know Product is Addicting.

Title Tidbit
Â
Hi Chávez Families,
We would like to introduce ourselves. We are Debra McIntosh and Alice Williamson, and we are the Title One Reading Specialists at Chávez. Title One is a federal grant that funds schools to help with student achievement. Please watch the 2-minute video below for more information about how we use our Title One grant money at Chávez. We spend the first few weeks of school conducting reading assessments with students who might need extra reading support. If your student is chosen to participate in our Title One reading intervention program a letter will be sent home with your child. If you have any questions about your child’s reading level, their progress in their Title One reading group, or general reading questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
Sincerely,
Debra McIntosh mcintosh_d@4j.lane.edu
